About the credit page, I'm pretty sure the relation is because the pon poko/pom poko is japanese onomatopoeia when tanuki hit its belly, and it is kind of folklore.
There's something about the art of this manga that just screams Ecchi for me. I'm not sure if their legs, their clothes or the angle of each scene, but it's just so much tease.
