I want to fastforward to this woman becoming badass, like the author does with all his female chracters.
At first they are all crybabies and soft, then 25 traumatic experiences later, they become hard ass bitches kicking butts and killing chuds.
Looking forward to their dream diving duo together, she'll be some kind of close combat demon,choking them perverts and crushign their bones, while the main chracter will be using his staff and looking all scary.

Or this is the last we'll see of her, and a new female character will enter the scene.

Not all of them. I haven't read Holyland, nor do I intend to, so I don't know how strong the female character in that one is or gets. The female leads in Suicide Island (which I translated) and Taiga of Genesis (which I don't read, but judging from the covers) are strong. But the female lead in Destroy and Revolution (which I also translated) was the quintessential damsel in distress.

So it's 2:1 for strong ladies in Mori's works that I know, not exactly a big lead. Lawless Island hasn't been translated into English that I know of.

So it's 2:1 for strong ladies in Mori's works that I know, not exactly a big lead.

It's because I'm currently reading his other ongoing manga taiga of genesis, and also had in mind suicide island and it sequel when I wrote that comment.

It's just refreshing for an author to put the male and female characters on the same journey and watch them both get stronger together. I love that; it's rare. Usually, either the female lead is dead weight and the guy always has to save her, or there is an already established, very strong female character who is just naturally talented at whatever the Power System is in the manga, but of course she still needs to get rescued down the line by the MC who gets much stronger than her from his journey.

I've had my fill of the lone wolves mangas. Give that wolf a partner and make them go through the journey having each other backs. I don't want her to be there just for "emotional support" for when times get tough.

That's why my absoulte favorite manga is spirit circle. Well it was my favorite manga when I read it, 10 years ago or something. Taste change when you grow older, but i still remember how much of an impact it had on me. Highly recommend

Because I hate Mori Kouji and translate his works out of sheer spite. I was the one who wrote the obnoxious notes on Suicide Island chapters. I had forgotten someone translated Lawless Island, but I wouldn't bring myself to find out. Ironically, I think I've translated more of his works than any single other translator. With half of SI (80 chapters), two thirds of DxR (52 chapters) and all of D.D (40 chapters and ongoing) under my belt, not even the translator of ToG has me beaten on Mori Kouji. Masochism can take us far…

D.D and DxR are his works I can stomach the easiest, because they tone down the "lonely misfit young man finding his place in the world" shtick. DxR went to the dogs halfway and triggered my hatred of Mori, which SI cemented. D.D isn't there yet, but given his track record, I'm sure I'll end up hating it, too. Time to translate chapter 41…

do you remember which chapters? Would be intrested to know what you didnt like about it speifically .

I really liked Suicide Island,at least the beginning. I don't quite remember how it ended... maybe I never actually finished it?
There is a specific character arc the protagonist goes through, at first, his growth curve shoots up fast, but then it completely stagnates. He suddenly becomes this cool, level-headed, stoic, and strong person after 1 or two time skips. I wouldn't have minded if the manga just ended right there, but instead, it drags on. Once the main character stops evolving, he just goes through the motions of the plot, which makes the story feel stale for the reader.

That's the author's bread and butter so the reader can self insert and think, "He's just like me, fr." Watching that character transform into someone strong gives the reader hope that they can change, too. Because of that focus , the actual plot and story eventually become secondary, all the reader want is to see the protagnist become badass, and other people seeing how badass he is. Like every single shonen in the world.
But with this author,the protagonist isn't a ninja, or pirate, or magician, or alien, or superhuman, or hero, or knight.... he just a normal dude, which feels attainable. and he focus much more on the psycological aspect of it. So that teen me would think "damn that's deep, and im 14".

It's embrassing, but I remember when i started reading holyland, I liked it so much that I actually started shadow boxing alone in my room. because that was the plot of the manga, the protagonist training at home his punch every single day for idk how long, until he reached a point where he could one shot punch tugs to the ground. My teen brain thought that was so cool, and thought i could do it too. I started doing the same in my room for weeks, until I got bored of it.

Most of the ones I translated, which was the entire second half starting on 80, if memory serves. Certainly the ones after 110, when it was back to our group.

I get that. Just not my cup of tea. But what I dislike the most is the author's moralising, while refraining from any radical measures. In my view, Mori Kouji is the ultimate conformist and his series peddle self-change as the limit of change.

D.Diver breaks the mould a little because the protagonist is well-adjusted and the story is a more meat-and-potatoes meting out of justice with a twist. Coming from him, it's almost refreshing.

After reading some chapters, I realized I can't recall anything. I just remember the general plot, and that there was a male and female lead working together, whom I really liked. I'll add it on top of the huge pile of other manga I "plan to read."

Hopefully, you won't be disappointed with D.Diver. For now, the bad guys are still street criminals, your everyday rapists, pedophiles, and thieves who don't have much impact on society other than their immediate entourage. I'm interested in how it will develop, I would love for him to develop the same ideals and world view as Yuuki in destory and revulotion and actually tacle the real rot in society, the elite class, who control the system of exploitation, but while also sympatising with the everyday people.
