Yeah, This series, Death Note, and Gate are ones that come to mind. It's a hard genre to do well, but when it is done well, it becomes fantastic.

Fan translations only reached to approximately the early/middle of Volume 3 IIRC, and they've long since stopped because of the licensed Translation. So the Official TL has now passed the fan TL.

Currently there are 7 LN volumes out in japan. Vol 7 was released in February; Haven't been able to find a date on Vol 8, but hoping it's within the year.
