MC prob didn't think things through or is a tradition that the hero can become king at least through marriage. It's also not SUPER unheard of for a hero to marry into royalty

Yeah and the bar patrons could have meant king in a vague sense, like boss or chief. Even those in charge have work to do. So not about becoming royalty per se.
