I know it was supposed to be a joke, but effectively it wasn't. She used "a joke" as a safe tool to manipulate his current vulnerable state. Intentionally or not, it was a malicious move. You know it was supposed to be a joke and her trying to mess with him?
People need to look not at single chapter but whole story.
If normal guy manages to snatch "national beauty" as a girlfriend. It's not surprising that he is struggling with self esteem. The true drama of this story is that they aren't talking about it.
I'm not sure what kind of point you are trying to make here. The issue is that he is having self-esteem issues and expresses it, yet she is basically dismissing them, and not doing much to ease his worries. She instead plays off of those to push him into expressing his affection, which is IMO the exact opposite of what she is supposed to do - express her affection in the context of not caring about their difference in status, or emphasizing that he still has time before he have to worry about his career (since he's in high school) and that she is fine waiting for him to do that, etc.
And this is not a unique incident - she keeps acting like they are equal, but they are clearly not. She both holds all the cards to support him and is the only person who can since he can't confide in anyone else, due to both - the nature of their relationship and her work.
I'm just not sure if the author is portraying this as an example of an unhealthy, imbalanced relationship, and is planning to address this later, or do they genuinely think that this is fine. This relationship has so many issues, that them being step-siblings is not even worth mentioning. I've said it in one of the previous chapters, and I'll say it again: this feels like a relationship doomed to fail and could only be saved by the power of plot armor.
