I don't get how the Royals can threaten his family. His wife alone could probably level the entire kingdom. His daughter could set fire to the air itself. And he's the Hero. Who in the hell can threaten that?

Spirits can be forced. Gods are usually bound by limits as to what they will or will not do. People can hurt your loved ones before you can stop them, and despite the fact you might go hog wild in revenge, you are unlikely to be able to recover them. Additionally, it was shown that the hero has a strong sense of right and wrong and cannot in his mind act in a way that might bring danger and harm to innocents. The Prince has been shown to be willing to take advantage of that fact. Love is a very great weakness in many ways, also.

But I think you should remember GATE. Modern army vs a medieval fantasy army.
I don't recall THAT noble family giving up even after getting their armies bombed to ash and their throne JDAMed.
