then they revealed that he was just 14 in chapter 3...

It’s a work of fiction and it’s the least bizarre thing in it to boot))
And if it’s not enough, the story takes place in space with no or pretty weak gravity. And it’s a well known fact that people can grow quite tall in such conditions which was used by other science fiction writers a lot.
