My specific problem with this trope in particular is that it's just used as an excuse to drag out parts of the story....

That's the first time I've seen depicted in manga the idea of using sheathed swords as a non-lethal means of suppression. The problem with that is if they slide out mid-swing, you could catch him with the edge and then you've got blood. I'm reminded of the pepper spray capsule they tried to attach to rifle rails so cops could have a lethal option pointed but an OC spray as a warning - don't need to tell you how dumb that was, for many reasons!
