Think it's because he classifies the people around him as "friends" rather then love interests.

He is too dense to realize that they want to be more then to be sparing partners and rivals.

So when looking at the crowd surrounding the other guy he sees starry-eyed groupies looking for a sugerdaddy.

Meanwhile any groupie that tries to attach themselves to the MC are shooed away by his friends without him noticing.
