He still hasn't answered that question of his about what he wants to do with power. He thinks that becoming the next head of that other family is his ideal path forward, but he'd end up exactly where he was when he became a prodigy: lost and unsure. He needs to know himself before he tries to make his mark on the world.

That motivation isn't particularly worse than Latos. At the end of the day, the two of them should get to know each other better.

It is worse. He outright says that he doesn't care if this marriage destroys her, he just wants the status and prestige that it grants him because it saves him from a life of being the inferior sibling to his older brother.

She agreed to pose as a man to save her family's station with the fact that she gets to practice magic being a side benefit. He's marrying her for his own selfish gain and doesn't give a crap what it does to anyone else.

Except for the part where she's already destroying herself.

No part of this actually covers how he's approaching Latos as a person, and for someone who "doesn't care", he's been quite upfront about his intentions to both MC and Latos. The only thing he's forced is a contest of power, which Latos ALSO does, and he felt bad about almost revealing the secret.

Wanting to repair their family situation is the "right" thing to do, but he's still a kid too. He's not some therapist with a wide circle of friends to provide emotional support as soon as he arrives.

He explicitly says "This marriage proposal was like divine salvation offering me another path. Even if that path means I have to stomp all over Latos' suffering and effort, I want it."

So while he didn't want to reveal her secret, at his core he doesn't care if it crushes her to be roped back into the passive, subservient woman's role that her father wanted for her to begin with as long as he gets the prestige he craves so he can get out of the shadow of his brother.

Think you're stretching things a bit far. He didn't say he wanted her to be subservient, only the marriage itself.

The fact that he recognizes Latos suffering and efforts, and acknowledges his actions as trampling upon them, says a great deal already. They respect each other, and know that their surface desires are opposed and will not pretend otherwise.

Which means there is room for BOTH of them to figure out what they want in life.

While I like all the discussions about the characters in this chapter, I have a pretty big problem with it, like what the actual fuck is the MC doing in this fight? Like I get this is just so both characters can talk out their differences (which is great, I'm sympathetic to the reason but ultimately still think it's a bad decision) but why is the MC's whole battle tactic brain dead and dumb. He fights like Naruto in all of his fighting games (if you have played them you know what I mean), it's the same move set and ideas over and over again and hoping that it works, no real skill or planning is put into it. We had a bit of planning and skill before literally all of his skills were shown off to the world (and also counter really well too), so like come up with new ways to use the barriers that work against the counters that have been made.

This fight for example could have shown the MC trying a new way of using barriers, like for example using them as bombs that shatter because the barrier is unstable or as blades that repel magic on both sides of it so that it forcefully splits magic it come into contact with. There are so many interesting he can use them and change how they work to counter the weaknesses and just get stronger.

Tldr: characters actual talking about their differences and problems with each other, great. Fights that feel like someone spamming "A" over and over again when you could do other combos, terrible.

It's true that he never said he wanted her to be subservient himself. But he said he doesn't care that this marriage nullifies everything she's worked towards as long as he gets what he wants. And that means it will end with her in a subservient, passive aristocrat's wife's role because that's what her father expects and demands and his will is going to continue to be important because he's behind all of this and adopting her fiance into their house. She wasn't allowed to practice magic when her brother was alive. She only got to do it because she got him to allow her to attend school masquerading as her brother. The reason she's so afraid and depressed about the betrothal is because it means the end of everything she's worked for. And there's every expectation that he would know that after he and his father met with hers.

The fact that he recognizes her hard work and still chooses a path that disrespects it does say a lot about him: It says that at his core all he cares about is getting what he wants.

there's no positive way to spin "even if I have to stomp all over her effort... I want this." It's very, explicitly, blatantly a declaration that for him the ends justify the means even if those means are destroying everything Latos has worked for. It's him admitting that he will take her as his wife regardless of the consequences to her because what matters to him in the end is his desires. This is his salvation, not theirs.
