Near the end of the 1st volume. It's about to enter the 2nd volume. Be warned, there's a lot of "fluff" in the LN, at least in the early parts. I think the author probably got much better at writing as he went on, but I read some of the early parts and man, is it cringe at times.

It's not like he became an emotionless machine. He resolved himself (in that chapter) that he will have to do some terrible things for his goal, but that doesn't mean he's not going to get pissed off when terrible things happen, especially when he didn't expect or prepare himself for it.

I see your point. As I honestly thought it was more of soul corruption when it first happened, and his morality was just getting worse after encountering the high elf.

I'm sure he does feel some genuine affection for his "mother" but was genuinely trying to end her when he reacted. That goes to show his how strong his resolve is.
