The song and dance with the black mage tower master is a bit dull. Too much back and forth.
Edit: Also, the reason the black knights had for not fighting was that they weren't confident they would win, but it would also threaten the peace that their ancestor had bargained for. In that sense, it would be better for them to put up a front than be openly hostile towards the black tower master, even as just a formality.
