The only reason I imagine her saying it is that Machio looks all shiny on one side, and ugly on the other, like some ground beetle.

Is "жук" really unaware? Where is that came from? In russian it's "beetle" or "bug", if referred to person it could be shorten "жулик" (swindler, hustler) wich is not really applicable here =_=

Most likely because they had to cover up the japanese text, and since it was most likely over an audience, it would be weird to see 2 thirds of a crowd and a third of just white space in that panel
