Probably my favorite aspect of Dance Dance from a writing perspective is that Junpei is 'naturally talented' but it's only helping him a bit, rather than automatically making him amazing. He doesn't win anything yet, people are only believing in his potential so far. We also constantly see characters around him who showed potential at some point in their careers but eventually gave up for one reason or another. It adds so much tension to the story, since you're constantly on edge if Junpei can really reach those heights.

Right now he wants to do classical ballet, but I don't know what the series length is planned by the author. If it's +30 vols or something crazy like that, I can absolutely see all this hard work eventually just crashing down and it becoming clear Junpei just simply isn't built for classical ballet. His mind is too wild, there is no 'taming the beast' and so he gets forced to concede and switch to contemporary ballet.

Heck, I don't think this story demands him to even become one of the absolute best. It could even be an exploration into forming his own group, his own style. Something wild and unconventional that is built on capturing people's attention rather than showing prowess.

A lot of possibilities. I'm just glad the pace of his progression isn't quite that standard.

Yeah, usually you'd already start seeing "the diamond in the rough" reform and push towards new heights (80 chapters behind, damn, that's a lot), but Junpei hasn't really grown much, has he? True, he understands his limits and capabilities a bit better, and has more insight when it comes to people around him, including his rivals, but he's still very wild and untamed.

I'm kinda worried for him. It's like you said, it feels like he's not born for classical ballet, his head is always in the clouds, he yearns to be free, so a lot of aspects of classical ballet would be too constraining for his deeply passionate nature.
Take the upcoming competition: it's not like there's no place for personal touches and expressiveness during classical pieces' variations, but they would never be more important than impeccable technique, precision, and firm adherence to the script. And I'm like 80% sure he'll go off script again. Which will definitely leave an impression on the audience but won't be appreciated much by the judges.

Then again... from a purely narrative standpoint, I kinda sorta suspect we'll be having another conveniently placed time skip for Natsuki to reach "romanceable age" (I hate myself for even writing this), so they'll have to be separated for a while. And for that, at least one of them should win a year-long scholarship.
