Hoo boy...
To where? Where!?bro RUN
first reversal series that has made me think about the male loneliness epidemic and parasocial behavior. MC is essentially leading these girls on even if that's not his intention.Yeah, I dunno - Masato's very much acting exactly in the way that I could see him getting dumped by girlfriends in his past world.
The way he's acting with every heroine, in that close-distance / slightly-flirty way in terms of being complimentary and "kinder than simple politeness would dictate" manner is going to get him in trouble. He even said that he was called out for it when that one girl broke up with him in that flashback, but here he is, simply repeating history in an arguably worse setting, because of some weird misplaced sense of propriety that he decided on all on his own.
And it's a double whammy, because while he should be aware of the nuance of the world he's living in by now, at least at a surface-level degree (he works in a freaking host bar for crying out loud - he's got a front-row seat to the inverted nature of this world compared to his previous), but the way he's acting would have been bad enough in "our" reality, in terms of giving people the wrong idea.
Here, though...it's amplified all the more with how desperate the average woman is.
I feel bad for the five heroines, mostly. Their problems are all the worse precisely because of how dense and oblivious the MC is being, and while it's great for melodrama, it's not great for their general well-being.
You are blaming him for their actions and delusions. It is akin to a rapist saying she was asking for it because a woman was nice to him and dressed a bit sexy.
Are there reasons that women who have been ignored or looked down on by men to jump to conclusions like that? Yes. The same reasons many men in this world do the same.
Do you blame the women in our world for that?
from what we've seen, that's not so much the case in this setting; the guys are all (at least as depicted) more hedonistic and sorta cold/callous toward women.
The 1:39 series does have boys that are super afraid, but even that makes more sense, as the extreme ratio disparity would, I think, reasonably lead to women being very aggressive to try and secure a partner, because increased scarcity promotes more desperate struggles to acquire that resource.
Which means women would become outright predatory, when they have some 40ish rivals for the same partner.
In this setting, it's more like men just get their "pick of the crop", as it were (gross to say, but kinda fitting in the way women are treated in this setting, so). They can afford to be choosy, and don't have to check themselves because if one chick's turned off by their self-interested behavior, there's always another one in line waiting her turn.
So men are almost encouraged to be selfish and arrogant in just doing what they want, because while there's less discrepancy, it's still noticeable enough that women can't afford to have the highest standards when there's a reasonable chance it means they're Forever Alone - so there's no "check" on behavior for men.
