I also didn’t understand this part very well. What I assumed is that the guy really thought he was part of the team or that he was a relative of one of the girls. But that wasn’t very clear in the story.

I actually kinda find those parts of the story interesting in a way. Like I get it, manga, lol parents okay with guy several years younger possibly dating her isn't uncommon. But in this setting, it does make a bit more sense. Like 1:5 is still close enough to not be, drop everything, acquire him! But still enough to probably be happy about it. Gives a vibe of how kinda fucked up the world is if you think about it.
