Having seen the 1:39, I see what's wrong with this story: it makes no use of the 1:5 setting. Everything that's happened so far is completely plausible in the 1:1 world.
While i do agree that it doesn't make full use of its premises, it's still only 1:5 ratio where for every 500 female, there is only 100 male. Unlike the 1:39 one where for every 3900 female, there is only 100 male.
This kind of interaction is still plausible and probably will also be similar with our world. The only difference based on the story is that the "undesirable" and the "unpopular" would also get a chance there compared to ours.
The cultural role might be switched, going closer to the ancient arabic and middle eastern time where there is actually less female since they thought female is a burden and often killed their daughter if not a son. But even then their world aren't that radically different. Still, there is a lot could be done like how protective the female are, what role the male have in society, etc.
