Interestingly enough, I watched exactly one episode of Gintama, and it was the one that let me get the jokes in this comment section.

I’ve rewatched Gintama all the way twice, it’s far and away my favorite anime of all time. The jokes still hit, the shounen-style battle arcs still hit, the heartbreak hits still hit.

Just skip the last arc, it’s supposed to be a swan song but it just doesnt have the punch and the finale is unfucking acceptable. If they were going to go that route they could have done it with a more appropriate set up, instead it really does look like the author just flat dropped the series. Maybe he did
