BLASPHEMY! BLASPHEMY! SUMMON THE INQUISITORS! HOW DARE SHE DENIGRATE THE THEOTOKOS!!!! BURN HER IN THE FIRES OF HELL!!!
The mangaka is surprisingly very well-acquainted with traditional Christianity, especially Catholic doctrine - enough to know that the Virgin Mary isn't a surrogate mom in conventional theology. Reminds me of the time I realized Maria-sama ga Miteru was chock-full of references to Catholic school life. I do wonder how far this series is going to push it. Saint Young Men went all the way, but it's clear the mangaka had very passing knowledge of Christianity. I wonder how someone "closer to home" will do it.
