Speaking as someone of faith, it is interesting the marriage between "Japanese Sensibilities" and a religious themed fish out of water story.

I also do appreciate the "mostly lacking" sexualization of the female character, even when she fails to understand what cloths are and clothing norms.

We don't know if it was cancelled. The ending was announced seven months in advance, before volume 2 had even gone on sale, and according to Kuroha's most recent twitter post, the series received decent enough survey results. We may never know for sure, but it is entirely possible the author chose to end it himself.
