Cherry trees bloom in spring, which is when a lot of trees release pollen, so I assume this is a hay fever joke.

Coming in late but after WW2 Japan tried to restore a bunch of forests that were cut down during the war by planting a ton of trees. Problem is they only planted cedar and cypress trees and those both dump a ton of pollen into the air.

So basically Japan has a huge hay fever problem caused by those trees specifically and it gets really bad around the same time of year as cherry blossom season.
