Well she is lucky to be trained so carefully at such a young age in something she likes, in most cases in real life, being praised for having talent will carry you for a few years against the average, but eventually you'll hit a wall and find yourself being just another one of many many talented people trying as well, some with unique ways or years of experience meanwhile you just remained the same.

"Can she really win this?"
It's a sparring match. It's not really supposed to be won as much as you're supposed to learn from it. Well, technically it's a quest, but winning a match like that is not necessarily the objective. Story-wise, she's not supposed to win here. There's not enough at stake.

re: TL note
The gifted kid in high school -> average almost-adult in university pipeline never ends.

Also being gifted enough that you didn't really develop work ethic until you hit a very late wall fucking blows.

Yeah and for what we can see, apparently she didn't need to win in order to get a new skill or reward, she just needed to be recognized and she did both by Ra-sen and the Village Chief ! but she rejected the offer...

Cunning, conniving oni is going to trick herself into making best friends.

I love the art for this arc, not just because it's lovely, but it gives you a sense of scale for just how huge the oni are, their sexual dimorphism, and a bit of variation in their heights and builds. We've seen Ma-Tou (237cm) in relation to the party (1 Crim = 146cm, 1 Hinagiku = 120cm), and seen closeups of the nameless masked male oni before, but that's been about it.

This time around we see that Ma-Tou is fairly tall for a female oni (she's slightly taller and broader than the others in the ladies' hotspring back in chapter 90), and Ra-Sen is both shorter than the swordsmith (~210-ish cm?) and of more slender build. Chief Gi-Teru is just an absolute unit, about a head taller than the other male oni (1.5 Ma-Tou heads, 2 Ra-Sen heads), and is easily more than 250cm tall (horns excluded). :glee:

Tsubaki...is just a human-scale girl with oni horns. Both a young oni child and a hypothetical oni with human-style achondroplasia (genetic dwarfism) would have proportionally short-but-chubby limbs; an extremely short oni would still have broader hips and shoulders than Tsubaki or a human.

It is difficult to balance having fun and being serious enough to win in an actual competitive format, it inevitably gets toxic if you focus too much on being the best and the game can become stale if you stop pursuing getting better, learning your limits early can help you come to a decision faster.
