Well, he needed to bait the thugs to go elsewhere if he wanted to have a quiet nap.

At least use the wound in a better way, the author could just use the scenario where the thug took hostage of little Momiji and he got injured from trying to save her...

yeah, you are right. usually revealing a characters past and involving a hostage would bring quite the vibe with it. however right now it feels completely random. the cases are also getting more random, for example the last case

Based on his skills seen in the flashbacks, I get the sense he's just playing along with the demands to give himself time to figure out who's behind this.

However, Iori and Momiji feel like largely unnecessary characters to me, to the point I barely remember their names. I think Momiji was made largely for one of the movies...? They were introduced post-950 at least, which Aoyama had to know is close to the end game and not a good time to introduce a character for an unnecessary love triangle plot. Here's hoping there's some big reveal about her grandfather the former prime minister or Iori's background that explains why they've stuck around in the story. Like maybe the thugs and that politician who died were connected to the Black Organization.

That tends to happen after well over a 1000 chapters, 28 movies and a ridiculous amount of episodes. I think it’s done pretty well keeping interest considering.

Damn, time flies when you barly have any chapters a year, and even less story progression... I remember when Iori first appeared and everybody went crazy about he being Rum.

For the case: the first time I have seen the pen and the hole, I know that the man write something to his own body. 😀
I hope this case is just a setup for something bigger, 'cause it's kinda boring...
