Seemed like essentially Lovecraftian horror to me. Stuff comes from the sea, bad stuff happens, there are no good endings, comparatively little is ever meant to be made explicitly clear on which bits are insanity and which are actial dark magics descending upon the world, but lots of people are going to die horribly either way. That sort of thing.
