I'm not keeping up with this manga very thoroughly but it is the sort of thing I like to see more of. Thanks, Hi Wa Mata, for putting something adult-oriented, but refined rather than very violent or vulgar, on mangadex.

The timeskip really caught me off guard, I thought I had skipped a volume or something.
Yeah, I thought it had too. Seems like it even happened right in between chapters in this latest posted volume as well, that's what threw me the most.
Volume starts with checking out the factory in Vietnam, then all of a sudden it's a failure and so's the studio?

The first two chapters in this volume were released/take place in 1995, the third was in 1996, then everything past that was in 1999. Originally Shima had sort of ended after Section Chief and everything past that were sort of bonus "what's he up to now" chapters, but then Hirokane-sensei decided to continue it as a regular series in 1999. (Though there are a few random non-canon Shima things that were compiled in a book called Shima Kousaku noYuuga na Ichinichi) So it feels like a bunch of quick timeskips, but after this point there aren't any really.

I'm glad you like it, though you really should read it. Also I'm not so sure if it's free of violence or vulgarity. They're kinda rare but there's a few very violent moments. Also it's full of sex scenes.

Man, all this is doing is convincing me that the wine business—like pretty much all other appraisal based businesses—is pretty much bullshit with weird holistic nonsense and other such stuff. Chapter 18 especially where it keeps going "oh this wine was unremarkable until Influential Person said it was amazing and then suddenly everyone agreed it was amazing and the price skyrocketed." Seems like an industry that's ripe for bribery, collusion, and other such activities to artifically manipulate prices.

No different from the art world or the current retro game market I guess.

Also, Chizuru's already a fun character and one of my favorites and it's nice to see that even the author and Japanese fans seemed to think so as well going by that commentary.

There's a lot of sex, yeah, but I wouldn't say it's vulgar, again from what I've read. The sex is relatively tastefully depicted with the women, while attractive, at least looking reasonably realistic for a manga. By 'vulgarity' I refer to the typical ecchi manga, where balloon-breasted naifs say either ridiculous or vaguely uncomfortable stock "orgasm" lines while the everyman (nobody) hero rails them with all the passion of a meticulously-programmed automatic laundry machine.

Ahhh, okay, that explains it. Thanks!

Also, I like to think of the series as a whole like a medieval/sengoku period drama, only with businessmen and boardrooms instead of knights/samurai and castles.

I added all the other Shima series as titles to Mangadex if folks want to uh, follow them or whatever. The rest of the main series plus the prequels. I'm of wary people won't understand the ordering of the series and think you're supposed to start with the "Young Shima Kōsaku" ones. But I think at this point after we've been doing it for two years now it should be well enough known that "Section Chief" is the first one published so that's where you start and then the prequels are like th Star Wars prequels where you get to those later.

My only complaint about that is the titles of the later series kinda spoil the future plot a little bit.

Godspeed with the series!

Personally I think this is a case where it's not a problem. Sure, you know that Shima is going to keep getting promoted but seeing how he gets there and what happens when he does is what's interesting. Like you know, just based on the fact that the series is still running, that even though Shima was going to be able to save his job and get Tomabechi ousted the particulars of how that happens are still interesting, even if you know what the eventual outcome is.

I think the worst was when he
was upset his wife was cheating on him while he was in New York, but straight up had a kid with Irene.
Like, bro. Come on.

Him being a flawed protagonist helps the realism of the series though, I think.

Just got caught up, really loving this series and can't wait for more. My favorite part is probably learning all the intricacies and intrigues of all these different industries.
