Just read some articles on that, and wanted to know what the intellectuals of the world think about this issue

The purpose of life as we know it is to reproduce, and it shapes our way of thinking. You can think of species as a single entity that is programed to survive. We think we have the option to choose because we want it, but it's really the collective.

No, we each play out the parts fate has written for us.
It was inevitable that I'd be bored at this instant and open the forums. I would always open Lounge instead of any other forum and it would be this thread that would arrest my gaze. At that point I had no choice but to dance to the strings of the prime mover, cast my vote and write this message.
We are compelled ineluctably down pre-ordained paths. Free will is an illusion.:wooow:

Link the articles, or at least tell me where to read them. Here, I'll give you a serious answer.

I believe in free will and I believe in fate. Everything that has occurred has been predestined and nothing can change what has been set to stone. However, we do not know what fate lies ahead of us. And I don't believe in fortune telling. We can choose to believe in whatever we want, say whatever we want, and do whatever we want. No person feels that anything is forcing him to do anything. That is free will.

I live in quite a religious country so this issue has been discussed extensively in literature. After all, if God has already decreed our fate, why should one strive to do anything? To paraphrase while translating loosely: "Keep striving, for everyone will be helped to do that of which he was created for. So whoever will enter Paradise will be enabled to do the deeds of the people of Paradise, and whoever will enter Hell will be enabled to do the deeds of the people of Hell."

And I think that's quite a nice way to think about it regardless of if you believe in God or not.

as a famous man once said, "Free will is a myth. Religion is a joke. We're all pawns, controlled by something greater: Memes. The DNA of the soul." (/ref)

but in all honesty, technically yes, but the system is so screwed up that we might as well not

I consider that to be more free choice than free will: you're free to choose whatever you want, but what you want to do is itself set in stone.

Why strive to do anything if my will isn't free? Because it has been ordained that I must strive. And so I do.

I've never understood the question. Even now as a physicist, I view free will as a very human quality. Yes, you may regret having sex with a stranger that you don't remember from all the alcohol, but you were more in control of yourself when you were sober.
Plus, If two bottles were presented to you. One of grape juice and the other of bleach. Sane people will drink the juice 100% of the time.
Of course there are limitations to what you can do with your will selon your genetic lottery, country of residence, wealth. Just like with physical limitations like gravity and time.

A teological thread in my atheist lounge?! We have great film references but Spanish ones, so few will appreciate it. Well, after the (French) existencialists there's not much to debate, so I'll just rejoy in the fact that, unlike many, I know I have free will.

I believe it exists, but there are many that make me doubt it's an universal thing, if I'm honest
