At a certain point for stories like this I think, "Why is a grown ass adult mean to the person he likes?", just write a story about middle schoolers instead. If this guy was the 2nd ML, and the other guy did the bare minimum of not being rude to the FL, we'd all hate this dude.

I'm sure it works for others, but for me the cute moments don't land
