Alright, I’m gonna lay out a little theory and some thoughts I’ve had for a while now about the characters

Spoiler: Theory stuff

The poison mushrooms are born from corpses. And they resemble the humans they were born from. Maybe the edible mushrooms are also born from corpses, but that’s harder to speak on as it is now. They could actually be nature spirits, more like the kitsune. What’s the differentiation and is it arbitrary? So far we haven’t really seen what makes one edible and one not, except every poison mushroom seen actually spews mushroom spores, and I don’t think we’ve seen any edible ones that have. I at least think the poison ones are born from a specific type of death, like suicide, or died with some other specificity like an emotion or series of thoughts. I think the latter is more likely.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this story took place in Aokigahara or something as well, though that would complicate the former assertion, so consider it a small consideration. It would be kinda funny if it ended up being suicide by mushroom though.
I inferred this from the cover really, showing a dead little girl’s feet that look like Beniten, a bit of how the edible mushrooms/kitsune treat the poison ones, and Tsukiyo’s behavior, but really it was mainly the first thing. Corpses are treated as a valuable resource, but I could see the ones birthing poison mushrooms being completely kept away from for that reason. The ostracisation of poison mushrooms comes from their inherent nature, something “unnatural” perhaps, or more accurately “unclean”, and it might not even be something they can be conscious of.
That also brings up the question why Beniten wasn’t ostracized to begin with, since it sounds like children aren’t too uncommon but still rare possibly, but poison mushroom children would be exceedingly rare, so perhaps they didn’t know how to deal with her until eventually deciding she had to be done away with to be on the safe side. It would make her parents apparent kindness to her up to that point make more sense if was in actuality indecision towards a responsibility foisted upon them. Then everyone finally decided to just get rid of Beniten, leading to the beginning. But again, that calls into question the true nature of the poison mushrooms’ misfortune, and where it starts and ends, since we don’t really know what’s actually bad about them (and I know the whole story is leading up to this). If this was because of their origins being something related to being born from a corpse….
So many questions…

Well that’s just my thoughts at least, apologies if that came off as rambling to anyone who took the time to read all that, just wanted to get everything out all at once. I’m really enjoying this manga so far in every way, from the art to the plot to its storytelling, I hope it’s able to reach its end

And I totally expect for any one of those thoughts to be completely dashed by the next chapter lol

When Tsukiyotake got drunk it seemed to have given the impression that he likely came from suicide victims and he would come to know his purpose by visiting that dead body. Through what mechanism, I don't know. Other mushrooms likely came from "normal" deaths (people being predated by animals, plant and animal decomposition, death from physical trauma, anything not self-inflicted). Because yes, culturally, suicide is seen as undesirable for many cultural reasons.

I also considered that the setting was Aokigahara given its reputation and that some of the mushrooms we've been getting are Japanese mushrooms. Plus, it doesn't make sense for any other forest to have so many dead bodies if it wasn't known for hosting suicides like Aokigahara did.

I'm a little unsure with the theory about Beniten's parents since Beniten's father didn't express hostile feelings for Beniten when he was drunk. I assume he genuinely loved Beniten as her own until she grew up a little and he realised she was poisonous through her own physical markings.

Oh snap, excellent find! I shouldn’t have downplayed it in my original post, but I don’t even remember why I did that when I had it in my gut so long
Good to see that the suspicions of it being Aokigahara have some solid grounding though

I wonder now how that part will play out within the story, like if they will ever become aware of the forest and its infamy at large or if it will stay on their level like it has so far?
