Occam's razor, no need to over complicate something when you can simplify it in easy terms. Riddel had a bad day, end of story. Frustrating but believable.

It's too bad that this isn't a simple explanation. It's a whole chapter of explanation, done in a very boring manner. If almost everything was going to work out perfectly with little effort from the main characters, the author could just say in one page "the nobles took care of it." But if the author was skilled enough to apply occam's razor to their writing, they probably wouldn't be getting axed in the first place.
