Fun fact: this is the same Sumire as the one in P-man. In fact there is another chapter featuring her that shows the person she loves is indeed P-man.

As stated in the above comment, Sumire is actually Perko from the
Perman manga. Mitsuo from the Perman manga is currently training on the Birdman home world, this chapter pretty much confirms that at this time he still hasn’t returned to earth.

I thought Sumire was just a supporting character when I read Doraemon as a kid. It wasn't until much later that I read Perman that I understood she's a crossover character. So after more than a decade, at least that's how long it seems to be, Mitsuo has yet to return. Wonder if the guy even comes back to visit every now and then or not. Too bad we never get a conclusion for those two.

Knowing what happened in Perman also adds more significance as to why the last panel focuses on the window showing the great dark space beyond. It's honestly little details like this that makes Sumire's appearance in Doraemon even more memorable!
