This is a fascinating story about being an outsider to society, particularly in regards to being trans. The characters tackle discrimination, trying to pass, wanting to have children, and more. I think it does a good job dealing with these issues with empathy, but bear in mind that this story was released in 1996. As such society is way less supportive of these people than in 2019. For example one chapter is focused on a trans-woman who is frustrated by her inability to have children. In 2019 America, she could adopt a kid, even if she can't get pregnant. But in 90s Japan there is no way the government would allow such a thing. They didn't even allow people to change their gender on ID until 2002.
In regards to romance - don't expect very much. The two women definitely care about one another, and there are a few romantic elements, but it is vague whether they are just friends or if they are going to start dating at the end of the story.
Overall I would recommend this to trans people or anyone interested in learning about the experience of trans-women in the 90s.
