i mean tbf unless it's a known company super supportive of it (outside of like rainbow capitalism)/versus just ppl producing yaoi/yuri for fujoshi bait, you wouldn't necessarily come out to your coworkers and such, or you might get criticized if you did write a story that's like "hm, i dont' think this will appeal to others as much" since every one's diff, even if some straight rom coms are full of cliches too

and lol i can understand mangaka being allowed to be more flexible in not showing up for meetings but i imagine you have to be more "famous" to be able to keep to yourself/being distant from the public eye like akira toriyama was, or be super amazing and turn in stuff like one week before the deadline as opposed to being a 'difficult' person to work with (i know the industry is still 'huge' in japan but i wonder how many artists are more famous as independent versus being part of a publisher contract or so if they want full control of their story and not wanting to make changes)
