Despite having grown up in Eastern Europe, we’re not told/taught much about the Eastern theatre other than that no matter who happened to be occupying the country generally made everything shitty.

The series has been a more tolerable way of dissecting what happened rather than listening to your older relatives reminiscing how the Rolling Stones performed a show, or standing in lines for groceries, etc. I can only imagine that life was actually much worse than history cares to tell, because no one ever seemed willing to speak such atrocities back into existence.

Zhukov really was a ruthless person, but I kinda understand where he was coming from, for him and the Soviet Union, their Great Patriotic War was one of survival, since they had the (correct) assumption that the Nazis would exterminate them instead of simply taking the territory they wanted.

Honestly, I feel so bad for Serafima, she was just a normal girl and now she's thrown into hell on earth.

Killing the cowards isn't something linked only to Soviet Union in WW2.
France practiced it a lot during WW1 (and it was probably the same for most countries taking part in it).
WW2 had a lot of atrocities to happen, but WW1 was probably the most ruthless ever in its own way.

Killing deserters to protect civilians is something i have never thought about. It makes sense, the soldiers have already forfeited their lives by enlisting to protect those who cant protect themselves, so any wavering in moral will result in civilian lives lost.
