Pffft… turns out Ayato is just a GLC (Good Looking Coward). Even though MC looks kind of useless, he can gigachad and stand up to a foreigner or a thug-like NTR-type guy who’s harassing Suzuno and Kano :chad:

This is a really weird portrayal... Is it just me, or is the way it's drawn make it seem if the big bro has a sort of trauma rather than just fear?

Like, if the intention was to make him look like a coward, I don't think this does it. It looks more like he's having a panic attack just by looking at them from afar. It's drawn in a way to invoke pity and sympathy on the reader instead of disdain, hence why the MC is confused and questioning his brother's behavior instead of scolding or hating him like you'd expect in a scene trying to portray the other guy as inferior.

Yeah, now that I think about it, chapter 7.5 makes me believe we're not meant to hate the brother... I wonder what's the reason he reacted this way.

Hilarity aside in just how tropey those two coming up to Kano & Suzune are, the brother's reaction is somewhat interesting.

It wasn't just his face, but also that shaking of his hand--he fist was balled, but he still seemed rooted in place. Perhaps something from the past that would inform that sort of response?
We know that Kano fell in love with Yuito precisely because he tried to come to her rescue when she was being bullied years back--and that she says that Yuito was the only one who stepped in to help. Maybe there's some connection there, to what the brother is experiencing here, that just hasn't been fully depicted as of yet?
Hopefully the next chapter gives more info.

But for Yuito, this is consistent with what we know of him from before. He stepped in to help Kano once before, so he's definitely capable of this sort of decisive action when it comes to the safety & well-being of those he deems important.
Even more interesting--he specifically named "Kano-san" when telling the two off. Not her sister, not "these two" together.
So methinks he's starting to shift in his feelings toward her, more and more.

That aside; if I had my way--I agree with someone else here, and I hope that those two dudes are just foreigners and the whole thing's a misunderstanding. Would be a nice subversion of the trope, and it wouldn't take away from Yuito's moment of bravery in stepping in, even if the situation isn't actually one of imminent danger for Kano & Suzune.

At this point I feel like the foreigners being friendly and the entire thing being a misunderstanding stole the crown of "being playboys" as the more common trope. I'd be more surprised if they were actually hitting on them lol

I guess it's the question of whether it's more important to the story that they actually be trying to pick up Kano & Suzune, or it's appropriate to have it be a misunderstanding.

The former, at least also makes the brother's apparent "freeze response" more understandable and less worthy of condemnation. He would look more silly, I'd argue, if it turned out the two dudes were just friendly and it was all a misunderstanding and they weren't hitting on the sisters. I wouldn't fault him given the appearance of things, but the lack of actual danger, even known after-the-fact, wouldn't do him any favors.
And, them actually being after the sisters means Yuito's reaction is fully warranted, rather than him stepping in where it technically might not have been necessary. And in light of that, I'm inclined to maybe change my original stance, for the sake of his character arc.

That said - there's also the potential they turn violent in being rebuffed by Yuito. No reason to think they necessarily would, but they're presented as large and imposing; there's implied physical danger in just their appearance, which is what makes Yuito's course of action all the more noteworthy. But if they were to turn violent toward him, well now he's likely just gonna get his ass kicked until someone/something else can intervene.

So, mostly depends on what the author's trying to make happen from this. Yuito looks like a hero, more so if they're the geunine article. But hopefully he doesn't have his face rearranged to boot.

A misunderstanding would help keeping the status quo. Yuito would feel embarassed instead of having character growth, the brother could justify his lack of intervention by saying he understood the situation, amd there won't be risk of physical violence.
If the guys were actually hitting on Kano, there is the potential for Yuito to get a solid punch and Kano volunteering to nurse him. It's also possible the brother would call someone to help, ending up as the one who saved the day in Suzune's eyes.
I'd prefer Yuito manages to repel the guy by himself amd get character development, but the author might think it's too soon.

The brother is such an annoying hypocrite, always complaining about the MC hanging out with Kano when he's the one always hanging out with Suzuno. I wouldn't be surprised if he knew how she feels about him and hangs out with her anyway.
