Well I sure hope they've got the same attitude towards lawyers as they do for doctors cuz if they talk to one this dude's fucked.

Having just played through the Phoenix Wright Trilogy, I'm an expert in Japanese law. I'm pretty sure medical malpractice doesn't exist in Japan. The only thing they care about over there is murder.

@lasercats Who knows, lawyers might not even exist in the world of this manga. Also, I'm not sure the kind of lawyers the USA has exist anywhere else in the world. It's only in the USA where lawyers walk from door to door like vacuum cleaner salesmen trying to find out if people have any made-up grievances they could preferably turn into class action lawsuits.

@kaarme i mean I'm joking since it's a manga and this kinda stuff is ok, irl you can't really do 80% of the stuff you do here even if you save a person since it's against medical guidelines, in most countries the government itself will sue you and might even take ur Medical license if you push it too far. Medicine globally is surprisingly strict about things you can't do. At least in g20 countries.

@lasercats Normally it wouldn't be such a huge deal because it's unlikely a physician would need to do crazy things more than once in their life (in a developed country). If an emergency procedure succeeds, it ought to be fine. People's lives have been saved in all kinds of circumstances all the time. It's not like there would always be a hospital right next door. That's why the first case was fine since the kid was dying. The second case with the geezer wasn't fine because the only reason he did the reckless thing was because the old woman didn't want to leave the island. It was a fiction only scenario.

One strange thing about this manga is that the Japan in the story apparently has no helicopters. This ultimately means cases that shouldn't be so urgent/bad suddenly will be much more so. Six hours on a boat is quite different compared to less than an hour by air.

@kaarme I suppose yeah, but I totally forgot the heli ambulances 'till you mentioned just now. I suppose the mangaka is banking on people forgetting they're a thing. Fun to read manga nonetheless. God I wish we had more team medical dragon rn.

@lasercats You act like helicopters are available everywhere. Who is going to pay for them? One trip costs $39,000. That is one year income of a household and with people here are fisherman, their income is even lower.

@miyako19 And you act as if everybody was living in a corporate dystopia where an ambulance trip robs a person of their life savings. According to a couple of googling results, ambulance trips are free in Japan, though the treatmeant aboard isn't. Treatment as a whole is covered for the major part by insurance (which is obligatory in Japan) and for the minor part by the patient, depending on their income level.

Consequently it's apparently a problem in Japan that people try to use an ambulance as a means of transportation to a hospital even if they were capable of travelling there on their own just fine. Reading about that, I wonder if it was a problem where I live as well, since apparently ambulance crews are quite eager to refuse transportation if a person seems capable of using a taxi, for example.

@miyako19 Government provides health insurance and covers these costs in most of the civilized world. Realistically Japan would definitely need to provide helis to islands, or literally anyone on islands would just bend over and die on any surgery necessitating injury. People would just move mainland and suffer there instead wouldn't they? At least they wouldn't die on a boat bleeding or whatever.

The MC being here is a waste of his genius talents. He can do so much good in the real world... It would make sense if he was old and wanted to get away from the world.. But this is just crazy
