It's not unprecedented in this manga, after all, Roshi was able to read Nam's mind way back in the first tournament arc. But it's weird that Goku didn't even need to learn, he just knew he could do it for some reason.

There technically is an explanation for why Goku can do this. Basically, back in Dragon Ball, Kami trained Goku after he beat Demon King Piccolo. However, unlike the other Z-Fighters, Kami specifically trained Goku spiritually rather than physically.
The whole reason for that was because Kami had intended to make Goku his successor, but Goku declined. So, it could be assumed that Goku learned it from Kami years ago... He just hasn't used it until now since he never needed it before.
