I mean teeechnically the alien probably did most the work and he's a black box so the author could argue he's an expert or that for aliens it isn't much more complicated than a pipe bomb

Yeah would have been more surprised if the bomb actually worked, hopefully four-eyes actually has a reason for stopping them now instead of right away. Maybe he wanted them to develop the virus so he could take it for himself? If we don't get an explanation this whole bomb plot will be a complete waste.
