I feel Al has been pretty open about using Blum, not like screaming it into the world, but in his nudge wink kind of way.
Didn't one of Blums inner monologues talk about that kind of thing before?
Al cares about Blum, so while he is using him, he also cares about his progress at becoming more "normal". He sees it as a mutual beneficial friendship/comradery.
