Oh thank God she didn't rejoin the party. That whole "don't trust people who help without asking for anything in return" line was complete bullshit. If anything, you shouldn't trust people whose ONLY motivation is money even less, since they'll leave you the SECOND someone can pay them more. I don't buy that "I suddenly decide to give a shit about these guys I completely abandoned" bit at all.

That was absolute shit writing in an otherwise amazing story

Chil is saying that it's hard to trust people if you don't know what their motive is. Him as a character doesn't believe in "the goodness of ppl's hearts", so he thinks that it's suspicious if someone claims to do help at a detrimental result to him or herself. Tho it doesn't seem like Chilchack himself thinks of it that strictly, because he seems to trust marcille and laius just fine.
Anyways, lots of gray in the world.

Namari may have abandoned the party, but that didn't mean that she did that out of coldness and cruelty. I mean, if you were employed at a sinking startup, would you work for free out of your passion and possibly bankrupt and lose your apartment, stuff, next meal, or would you abandon ship and find a job with a livable job? It doesn't mean you have NO passion for the work, but just that you had to be realistic about, like, living.

No. But I would absolutely do one quest for free, to save a friend's life. To her, her "friend" was worth less to her than one paycheck. That's incredibly fucked up and completely heartless.

@SunsetSeeker Once again this isn't just a regular job. She's not saying a friends life is less important than a paycheck. She's saying a friends life is less important than a paycheck plus her own life which would be at risk if they choose to fight a dragon so strong even an entire village of orcs who seem plenty strong seem scared of it

@SunsetSeeker Chilchack specifically explains during the discussion of payment on p25 that he has to stick with the job because he took his pay in advance. It's pretty well established that Chilchack is a stickler for his brand of professionalism, and that this sometimes commits him to trouble he'd sooner avoid.

As for Care, you'd have to care more than is strictly sane to stick with Laius. Consider the conditions of his mission:

To descend further into the dungeon than almost any other party (again).
To do the above without the supplies or funds that enabled the first descent.
This, with no prospect of affordable and trusted hires to replace party losses.
To manage the rigors of descent with a single spellcaster pulling double duty as mage and healer, constrained by her limited mana.
To defeat, at half- or two-thirds strength, a dragon that wiped a full-strength party.
To do all the above at greatest possible speed (and therefore least possible caution), risking exhaustion or special attention from the wildlife in their haste.
This, at the risk of dying deeper in the dungeon than any resurrectionist dares to go.

All signs point to a suicide mission, above and beyond anything Namari has likely done in the course of making a living. It's unreasonable to compare concern for colleagues' well-being with willingness to risk permanent, irreversible death. Less so to determine that the presence of the first but not the second indicates shallowness or hypocrisy. Caring comes in degrees.

Conflict settled over dinner. Food is the key to settled hearts & the bridge to understandings :)
