@randomname it’s because that’s the ability at base. The MC is thinking ahead and plotting out growth rates and the skill evolving, since it’s the base ability it has the most room to grow and so it’s probably the most versatile. (Evolve would give it either a lot of durations, less energy consumption or flat out more power, all of which are good).

As for strength, in this manhua it’s usually combining striking power, lifting power, durability and more(although it’s a...bit vague) so the kid’s more of a combatant, albeit not very skilled/powerful early on.
Yes, it’s CURRENTLY useless in a fight which is why the MC is training him as part of a deal for the drinks.

@Walter_vi_Britannia that's cause gaming is Weed's job. When he gets to a point where he don't need to work so hard to gain enough to live, he just keep going cause a lot of shit happen that cause him to need to get as strong as possible so he can keep things good for him. In the middle of one thing and other he shows the desire to fight a dragon for the fun of it(and the loot, obviously). Overall Weed is a grinding monster that probably enjoy the grinding and exploration, so even if everything goes easy he probably wouldn't relax too much cause that's the way he is.
@randomname having in mind that his own skill was completely useless in battle the kid's skill is really strong.

@Shakur Yea, that's basically it. But who would want to read a story about a person grumpily working everyday just to earn a living. Its only fun because of the various adventures. I'm saying that's he's not in the wrong for doing it this way...its just not as fun for the reader.
Although he does have fun sometimes, but most of the time he's complaining and annoyed with everyone else. Rarely does he find something to be fun and even then he finds himself disappointed for some reason soon enough. In the end its just one of his character flaws. Every character has them. It makes them more human. Ironic that weed's human flaw is his inhuman ability to work.

Anyway, I believe even if gaming is your job...you can find more enjoyment in that compared to a situation like in this manhwa where the MC's life is actually in danger and his job basically is to survive.

@Walter_vi_Britannia I always thought that Weed is just kinda like a parody of an ultimate professional gamer or something, who does nothing but game all the time. Also all the research that he does, and even training sword irl so that he is more badass in game... that being said I dont think he doesn't enjoy his time in that game.. some people just enjoy grinding like crazy.
