Kenji's 100% right. Nonviolent protest requires great sacrifice. You have to be willing to watch discrimination, prejudice, even outright murder in front of your eyes to gain media attention and public sympathy/pressure. Rather than protect yourself and the ones you love, you have to be willing to let them and yourself die to force change. Worse, sometimes you have to create situations that encourage those things. It's much easier to stay oppressed or resort to violence to gain rights. And yet that so rarely works. Violent protests are almost never successful, and even when they win, they tend to self-cannibalize, with a return to the status quo when all's said and done.
