The very next panel shows Ruka reaching to embrace Kazuki. Far from doing nothing and waiting for it to pass, she ultimately chooses Kazuki. If you notice the ages on the portraits, they continue their relationship for at least 11 years. Whether they reunite every five years or carry on in secret the whole time is for the reader to decide.

Wow that was peak fiction. Thank you so much for translating this. I feel like I should have seen the twist coming, it's such a classic plotline, but I guess it's classic for a reason.
