The author has thought of this since the very beginning of the story actually! In ch. 2 on p. 17 the king says that Sofie was made by 古代の禁忌技術, which the fan translation on mangadex translated as "forbidden techniques of old". But a more accurate translation would be "taboo technology/engineering of ancient times". What exactly those ancient times were is still a bit unclear, but there are indeed hints that those times might be ours.
