Also were both those guys, two women, or one guy and one woman. I thought it was a guy and a woman, but in the last panel looked like two guys.

Both look male to me in the intro panel. They just have anime hair and faces.

Generally the clothes are the biggest giveaway if the face/hair don't make it obvious, both are in stereotypical male clothing here with no characteristics that imply otherwise.

Feels like the twist is going to be him being a incredibly competent paladin who was charged with killing the Elf, but Elf knocked him out off screen by accident and gave him amnesia, but instinctively whenever he uses a weapon he is immediately targeting to kill the Elf.
