I was under the impression that this was misinformation. Remember, this is 100 years after the fact, and the guys talking about it didn't seem like the smartest people. This, combined with the fact that there were no other members mentioned in the begining scenes, gives me the idea that if there were that many, it would have been more likely that the group of heros was leading an army of ~100, not that there was a party of that size.
