I think it's somehow related to MC's having bad opinion about angels (see chapter 35, it's right there in the middle of the chapter, when FMC asks him why he hates angels). Theory:

• Some angel wanted to save a puppy from a truck but got himself into a danger.
• MC was a passer-by and saved that angel but lost his wings in the process.
• Angels covered this all up as a heroic deed and made that angel into a hero.

he's a cynic and self-centered more so than "hate" imo? cuz for someone who "hates" humans he indulges in human culture to no short extent* (valentine's idol stuff)

as far as being self-centered goes, he's not even especially bad, too. there's some mfers who are way worse about it (oversummoned)
