@Aliceteria This happens often in real life. But in this situation it didn't look like the MC tried to prevent it in any way. Someone manipulated the masses but he offered no resistance, no investigation, didn't even defend the empire from itself. If he really had a brain, he would know that civil unrest leads to more pain and suffering rather the pain from having to arrest and execute the culprits purposely spreading unrest. Allowing the 5th column to gain momentum is a huge failure of any ruler.
Now that he's dead, a lot of people are going to die from massive corruption of the "new"(puppet most likely) government.

What a bunch of idiots. They know he has a lot of monsters serving him yet never wonder why they were able to enter and get to him so easily. They're just running on an emotional high wanting a scapegoat for their grievances that they can kill. It's not like killing him is going to bring anybody back and are too hyped up to listen to the facts that he's not responsible and the ones who are died years ago. Wouldn't be surprised if the corrupt nobles he mentioned didn't just spread lies but also some people in key positions to keep the mob riled up and focused on him. Be interesting to find out how things started falling apart after his death since his power and contracted magic beasts are part of what kept other countries from invading and corruption in the government from squeezing the people dry.
@Doomer Part of that is because they just know there's an emperor but never had the opportunity to see him face to face up close. Also, I doubt educating the masses or encouraging literacy was done before he took the throne so word of mouth and rumor are the only ways they get news. Hence they don't know and running on an emotional high want satisfaction rather than justice or explanations. Especially with the corrupt nobles likely sending people to spread lies and spur the mob on.
