The pain of work is something that basically everybody dreads (even the author has talked about it at length), but this is a good showcase of the flip-side—the dangers of over-zealousness.

Without pain, humanity would go mad, and this is especially true for the pain of work. Imagine a farmer who spends every waking hour of his life harvesting crops, dying because he never had the desire to take a break to eat them. It sounds absurd, but cases like that would happen constantly. In fact, this is a very generous example; at least the farmer and the lion in the manga are doing useful work, just in excess, but without pain, we'd become capable of doing so much worse. People globally would constantly be getting addicted to utterly useless acts. Tired of your gaming addiction? Get ready for the exciting sequel—counting every grain of sand in the Sahara Desert until you die from heat stroke. Or maybe you'd end up attempting to drain the ocean with your bare hands. How about digging to the centre of the Earth with a plastic spoon? It's not that these things would be particularly fun or enticing to begin with, but without a natural self-regulating mechanism, the moment you get the idea to do them it would be incredibly difficult to stop.

It wouldn't have to be you that comes up with the idea, by the way. Without pain, we'd be prone to doing these things via manipulation and exploitation by others. Slavery would become the norm in a world where people don't work in their own interest. The slaves wouldn't even need to be bound by contract because they would never want to escape.

And that's where I think a hidden benefit of this pain lies: over time, it gets you to live more authentically and happily. Since you're always trying to optimize your life to reduce pain, you're forced to ask pressing questions about what the meaning of your life is and what you actually want out of it, so you can cull what's unneeded, including the influence and demands of others. This is a painful and difficult process which is the source of much of the suffering of young people's lives, but the light at the end of the tunnel—a simpler, happier existence— makes it all worth it... most of the time.

Additionally, since that pain motivates efficiency and problem-solving, it can be said that we owe a lot of the great inventions of humanity to pain. Though pain did make the problem in the first place, I think the world it ultimately created is beautiful, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Holy spit, its back.
And yeah it's pretty hype lol. Been almost half a decade by now since the last chapter.

Thanks for the translation.

I’m so pleased to see a new chapter of such a special manga. What will the world be like when the next chapter comes?
