Yeah the setting for the story is around 2020, the hardware price isn't as ridiculous as right now lol.
I can only imagine what she'll do if she lost all that in big 2025-26

He earned a lot of money but not THAT lot for the job. Erika's possible job on the other hand, will make them swimming with money as mentioned in chapter 2.

As for your other question, IDK how many chapters it will be, although i already thought of the ending and the outline of the story. And yes, this is only the start of the real story

He's not a detective, at least one that works for the city it looks like (that's my read anyway). At best he's a PI, or private investigator and their take home can range wildly depending on clientele and job frequency. PIs are basically contractors who have to find their own work and usually that work is stalking someone's husband or other trying to find cause for an infidelity divorce case or some other small thing they'll at most get like 500 bucks for.
