This adaptation is such a wild ride because it's following the general outline of the novel but clearly thrashing about attempting to do its own thing. Many of the things unique to the adaption really change it for the better compared to the novel imo but the fact it keeps getting forced back to line up with the novel also makes it rushed
Originally in the novel, the willow tree was not used as the grave marker of the sister's father nor was the tomahawk snake a thing. In fact when he first ascended the girls saw the light and stumbled upon the event and ran away in fear. He used the fog to befuddle their minds and lead them back to the village unharmed.. before dropping a poisonous snake on them in the hopes that it would make their deaths appear as though an accident
The majority of the events of the war arc prior to the spiritual surge is unique to this adaptation

This adaptation went well out of its way to give the characters emotions and make the readers sympathtic to their circumstances. Honestly, the novel is extremely generic and actually pretty boring because the main character is a murderhobo psychopath and all of the side characters exist as faceless pawns

That explains so much. I was thinking how weird it was for this tree who not only has the memory of being reincarnated from a human but also had such an emotional attachment to the two first humans he met was so quick to turn to killing and enslaving humans.
